What is CrossFit?
CrossFit is the principal strength and conditioning program for many police academies and tactical operations teams, military special operations units, champion martial artists, and hundreds of other elite and professional athletes worldwide. Our program delivers a fitness that is, by design, broad, general, and inclusive. Our specialty is not specializing. Combat, survival, many sports, and life reward this kind of fitness and, on average, punish the specialist.
The CrossFit program is designed for universal scalability making it the perfect application for any committed individual regardless of experience. We’ve used our same routines for elderly individuals with heart disease and cage fighters one month out from televised bouts. We scale load and intensity; we don’t change programs. The needs of Olympic athletes and our grandparents differ by degree not kind. Our terrorist hunters, skiers, mountain bike riders and housewives have found their best fitness from the same regimen. Is CrossFit for me?
Absolutely! Your needs and the Olympic athlete’s differ by degree not kind. Increased power, strength, cardiovascular and respiratory endurance, flexibility, stamina, coordination, agility, balance, and coordination are each as important to the world’s best athletes as they are to the overweight, the sedentary, the sick, casual athletes, and even the elderly. The amazing truth is that the very same methods that elicit optimal response in the Olympic or professional athlete will optimize the same response in all these populations. Of course, we can’t load your grandmother with the same squatting weight that we’d assign an Olympic skier, but they both need to squat.
If the program works for everyone from Olympic Skiers to sedentary homemakers then it will work for you. (Courtesy of CrossFit Inc.)
What can I expect on my first day?
We know CrossFit can be very intimidating to someone of their first day, so don’t worry, you’re first day will be focused on acclimating you to our gym. You will be lead through a warm up of basic movements, taught some new, basic skills and then given a workout in which the intensity will be completely personalized for you. If you feel confident in your fitness ability you can go as hard as you can, however if are not used to working out you will be encouraged to take it at your own pace.
What’s a WOD?
It is the “Workout of the Day”. This workout could be a “named” workout, developed and described on the national site, however most of the time it will be a workout we have programed here. Our programming is based on years of experience and the overall needs of our clientele. It is all part of the “constant variation” philosophy of CrossFit.
How do I get started?
We’re excited that you are ready to start with us at CrossFit Danville!. All of our new clients start out with our Fundamentals program to get you acclimated to our methodology and movements. There are a few ways to begin this process. You can come by our gym anytime to say hi, meet out coaches, see our facility and sign up for Fundamentals. You can also email or call us and we can give you more information and get you signed up for Fundamentals that way. Or finally, feel free to come to our Free Class on Saturday at 10:00 am to try out a CrossFit workout and see if it is right for you. Whichever way is easiest for you, we’re looking forward to meeting you and introducing you to our CrossFit Danville family!
I have a preexisting injury. Can I still do CrossFit?
Yes, absolutely! We have had many clients who came to us with various ailments who have found relief by strengthening the muscles around the problem area. Every movement in CrossFit is scalable which allows anyone to take part, no matter if they have an injured area or not. Our coaches have extensive knowledge in helping our athletes work around injuries and scale movements accordingly. If you have any questions about an injury, please ask us how we can help you modify any movement.
Do I need to get fit before starting CrossFit?
NO! ABSOLUTELY 100% NO!!! One more time, NO! CrossFit is designed for athletes of ALL levels ranging from professional athletes to people that have never worked out a day in their lives. We scale load and intensity for all of our clients based on their individual fitness level and ability. Trying to get in shape first yourself will just delay the benefits you will receive from a CrossFit Danville. Our daily workout is programmed at a level for a fit athlete, but the vast majority of our clients will scale down based on their abilities. We can scale every movement and every workout until you are strong and fit enough to complete the workout as it is prescribed (Rx’d). Fitness, for every single one of us, is an ongoing pursuit. Whatever level you are at now, this is the perfect time to start CrossFit and improve yourself.
Am I too old or too young to start CrossFit?
Because CrossFit uses natural, functional movements anybody can do it! Kids today play on jungle gyms, run, jump, and throw and that’s exactly what we do in CrossFit. You are absolutely never too old to start working out! Remember every workout is as hard as YOU make it and can always be scaled accordingly! Some of our most consistent clients are well past the 50 year old mark. When you come in and meet our clients, you’ll immediately see the varying ages and fitness levels all working together to improve their health and fitness.
